Celtic observation of Samhain In the Druidic religion of the ancient Celts, the new year began with the winter season of Samhain on November 1.
Just as shorter days signified the start of the new year, sundown also
meant the start of a new day; therefore the harvest festival began
every year on the night of October 31. Druids in the British Isles
would light fires and offer sacrifices of crops, animals and sometimes
humans, and as they danced around the fires, the season of the sun
would pass and the season of darkness would begin.

The night was dark and foggy at Maco Station, a small whistle stop, 14 miles west of Wilmington, N.C. The year was 1867. Joe Baldwin was the conductor on the Atlantic Coast Railroad freight train, and as his train was stopped to take on water from the tower, he saw coming up quickly behind him in the fog, another train light speeding toward his destination. Joe quickly jumped from his caboose, swinging his light wildly to warn the on-coming locomotive. Joe stood on the tracks and waved and waved, but the on-coming train did not slow.
